History

Rotary International

Theme: "Unite for Good"

Rotary International was founded on February 23, 1905, in Chicago, Illinois, by attorney Paul P. Harris. The name “Rotary” comes from the group’s early practice of rotating its meetings among the offices of its members.

Rotary International is guided by the motto “Service Above Self” and is dedicated to fostering global understanding and peace through service. The organization focuses its efforts on seven key areas:

  • Promoting Peace: Training adults and young leaders to prevent and mediate conflict.
  • Fighting Disease: Educating and equipping communities to stop the spread of life-threatening diseases, including being a key partner in the global effort to eradicate polio.
  • Providing Clean Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene: Supporting local solutions to bring clean water to more people and ensuring projects are sustainable.
  • Saving Mothers and Children: Expanding access to quality healthcare for mothers and children.
  • Supporting Education: Working to strengthen basic education and literacy, and reduce gender disparity in education.
  • Growing Local Economies: Carrying out projects that enhance economic and community development.
  • Protecting the Environment: Taking action to find innovative solutions and develop sustainable service projects to protect our planet.
