In a land once scarred by the Thirty Years War, drought, and the constant threat of wild elephants, 20 farming families across 104 villages in Medawachchiya are being given a chance to reclaim their livelihoods and dignity.

The Global Grant Project, a joint effort by the Rotary Club of Anuradhapura and the Rotaract Club of Yale University (USA), has begun its transformative journey—aimed at empowering these farmers through knowledge, innovation, and unity.

To move the project forward, a key meeting was held with Rotary Club President Rtn.Sandaruwan Samaratunga and club members, Divisional Secretary Kasun Seneviratne, and a team of officials including productivity, agriculture, and business development officers. Together, they established “Romex”, a new community-based organization committed to leading this mission at the grassroots level.

As part of the initiative, the selected farmers were taken on a powerful learning journey-first to the model farm of Rtn. Amal Piyathilaka, Rotary Club Secretary and dedicated Project Officer, and then to PG Agro Pvt Ltd in Thalawa. There, they gained practical insights into modern agricultural methods-learning how to maximize yield, minimize labor, and adapt with resilience.

This project is not just about farming-it’s about healing communities, restoring purpose, and planting the seeds of a sustainable future. With commitment and care, we believe these farmers will soon harvest the fruits of transformation.
